Take my life, and let it be all for you.
This summer I spontaneously received a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go HANG GLIDING—pictured above is me, Miss Bryn, flying 3,000+ feet above the Mississippi River strapped to a kite as a professional instructor safely guides our path… Pretty extreme, right? Much to my surprise, hang gliding wasn’t as ridiculous and sickening as it seemed. The only moments that I felt even a little bit nervous or as if my stomach would fall out of my body were when I doubted my instructor’s knowledge and experience. Before we took off, he reassured me that I had nothing to worry about because he had been safely hang gliding with thousands of people for over 30 years.
One of my favorite moments of this incredible expedition was when we reached our peak altitude. At 3,000 feet, we finally detached the rope that connected us to our boat and were free-gliding in the air above the massive river, the tiny citizens of Lake City, and the vast bluffs surrounding the area. It was utterly breathtaking, and I never could have created an experience like that with my own imagination.
“Just be present and soak it in,” my instructor recommends as we glided for what seemed like an endless amount of time. It was almost as if he could read my mind.
“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.”James 4:10
Reflecting upon my seemingly crazy journey hang gliding, I was given a new perspective on my relationship with my loving Father. Little did I know that God had been gently inviting me to hang glide with him my whole life! Instead of seizing the opportunity and giving him my “yes” to a wild ride, I was denying him the chance to totally rock my world.
This month’s song “Lift My Life Up” by Unspoken speaks profound truth into the adventure that awaits us when we surrender our entire lives and will to Christ.
I lift my life, lift my life up.
I give it all in surrender.
I lift my heart, lift my heart up.
You can have it forever.
All my plans, all my dreams,
Lord I leave it in your hands.
I lift my life up.
Have your way in me.
Take my life and let it be all for you.
As simple as the lyrics seem, this might be one of the most difficult things for us stubborn, broken humans to do. As a day-dreamer myself, I find it extremely challenging to not create expectations or imagine what upcoming scenarios will be like. I tend to question the Lord and to doubt him: “I don’t know Jesus, I have these incredible plans that seem fantastic to me—I don’t think it can get better than that… What do you think?”
Raise your hand if you’ve totally prayed this before! *Raises BOTH hands*
Brothers and sisters, the Lord knows exactly what he’s doing AND happens to have the most amazing, unbelievable things in store for us that we are incapable of ever imagining.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”Proverbs 3:5-6
Similar to hang gliding, we are called to take a leap of faith and to lift up our lives to the One who is trustworthy. Not only does our Lord know what he’s doing, but he also has an infinite amount of experience as our Savior—much more than the 30 years of experience I put my trust in this summer! When we offer our hopes, dreams, and plans to God, he will take us soaring and will offer us the chance to “just be present and soak it in.”
If you’re still doubting the truth that God has greater plans than our own, take a look back at your own life: were there times when you had something planned that seemed awesome, but the Lord made it even more beautiful than you could have imagined? Reflecting on our plans vs. God’s plans in light of truth is a great way to trust him with our future endeavors, and it’s one of my favorite ways to remind myself of the radical things he can do when we lift our lives up.
If one dude can take me on an unbelievable adventure in the air for only 20 minutes, how much more can our one true God sweep us off our feet when we offer him our lives?
~Years ago, Mike Gomez (guitarist) and Chad Mattson (vocalist) met on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic and decided to form their Christian Rock band Unspoken shortly after with the addition of Jon Lowry (multi-instrumentalist), Alan Pelno (keys), Wiso Aponte (guitar), and Ariel Munoz (drummer). Their first famous song, “Who You Are,” hit Billboard’s Hot Christian Song list at number 11 in 2012. The next year, “Lift My Life Up” fell into the same spot. Other great tunes Unspoken has shared with the world include “Start A Fire,” “Reason,” and “Higher.”
