He Knows What He Is About

By Shelby Hawks

Hi friends! I wanted to share with you a quote (seems to be my go-to lately!!) from Cardinal Newman that has been stirring in my heart lately:

“God has created me to do Him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have my mission. I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons. He has not created me for naught. I shall do good; I shall do His work. I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place, while not intending it if I do but keep His commandments. Therefore, I will trust Him, whatever I am, I can never be thrown away. If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him, in perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him. If I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve Him. He does nothing in vain. He knows what He is about. He may take away my friends. He may throw me among strangers. He may make me feel desolate, make my spirits sink, hide my future from me. Still, He knows what He is about.”

— The Mission of My Life by Cardinal Newman

Brothers and sisters, throughout our lives we face constant temptation to believe that the work we are doing, the love we are giving, the life we are living, is never, ever enough, and therefore, neither are we. We face doubt and anxiety and fall into darkness thinking that we can never measure up, never be a saint, never possibly please the God who created the world in all of its glory.

This lie seeps in when we allow ourselves to be defined by what we are doing rather than who we are becoming. Everything we are and everything we do is rooted in one truth: that we are loved by Him who first loved us. The response to this love is our life, our yes, our cooperation in His plan for our lives. No matter what we are doing, we have the gift to make ourselves and our work an offering to the Lord. He, in His goodness, uses this for our beauty, our becoming, our sanctity.

He has created each of us for some distinct mission, some purpose that is far beyond our imagination. There is a path to sanctity just for you! And the most beautiful thing about it is that He made it knowing you. He knows what He is about, friend.

My encouragement for you is to trust in the mission. Trust in grace. Trust in the Providence of the Lord. Whatever befalls, there lies the Lord. He works all things for our good, and there is never a moment He quits. He never leaves nor forsakes. In all things, He is present.

When all is blind and foggy in view, when you are tempted to doubt the mission He has for you, shift your gaze to the One who is Constant and repeat these consoling words: He knows what He is about.

May His Peace bless you.
