“Build My Life” by Housefires

By Bryn Baertlein

You know those songs that you hear for the first time and think, “whoa, this one is unforgettable!”? The songs that you continue to play over and over again, soaking in the lyrics and discovering something new about them each time you listen? Those tunes that one would think, “yeah, I’ll get sick of this one day,” but never do?

This month’s song is exactly that for me and many others I know. “Build My Life” was written by Pat Barrett (later becoming popular through the band Housefires) in the year 2018, and it has captured the hearts of many with its profound message of truth and light in the darkness of our times. Although this song is over 8 minutes long, it is worth diving in to discover its beauty as it takes us through two main parts.

Part 1:  Worthy; We live for you.

Barrett begins “Build My Life” showering due praise to God by praising him in his worthiness:

Worthy of every song we could ever sing
Worthy of all the praise we could ever bring
Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe
We live for you

Jesus, the Name above every other name
Jesus, the only One who could ever save
Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe
We live for you

Holy, there is no one like You
There is none beside You
Open up my eyes in wonder
Show me who You are and fill me
With Your heart and lead me
In your love to those around me

Here, he imitates the words found in both Revelation and Jeremiah as is written:

“Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.”
-Revelation 4:11

“Who would not fear You, O King of the nations?  Indeed it is Your due! For among all the wise nations and in all their kingdoms, there is none like you.”
-Jeremiah 10:7

Additionally, St. Paul writes in the book of Romans chapter 14, “For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.” (Praise God for the gift of his Scripture!) Here, he sends a message of hope to all people, not only those who may be experiencing the joy of life but also those who may be weighed down by the darkness of our world too.

So my friends, this first half of “Build My Life” points us to one thing: praising God, for he is worthy of our praise above anything and anyone else.

We can relate this easily to our society today as we see countless leaders in our nation attempting to be our “savior” or “king,” trying to fix all of our problems and lead us through the battles of the world. Some of us do believe and trust in these leaders, which doesn’t become a problem until we put our trust in these people above our one true Savior, Christ. Let us make our song “we live for you” one that is whole-heartedly directed towards our loving Father who is worthy of our trust, our praise, and our hearts.

Part 2: I will build my life upon your love.

The second message sung in “Build My Life” shares what our response to God is when we truly live for him and what can happen when we do this:

I will build my life upon Your love
It is a firm foundation
I will put my trust in You alone
And I will not be shaken

Although shorter than the first message, we repeat this phrase over and over again in deep faith and conviction that He is our firm foundation. Jesus himself shared with us a parable related to this with the Parable of the Sower from Matthew’s gospel– in the end, his greatest yield comes from the sower planting in “good soil” as it lays a perfect foundation for the crop to grow. If we continue to build our lives on God’s love, the perfect foundation, even in the most difficult of times we will overcome and be rooted in goodness and life.

So whether you’re new to “Build My Life” or have listened to it a billion times like the young adults and youth of our diocese, I encourage you to take this song to prayer one more time. Let the Lord show you who He is to guide you on your way.

~Pat Barrett is well-known for his incredible gift of composing Christian music, “Build My Life” only one among many. Barrett has partnered with famous Christian artists since 2011, including Chris Tomlin, Casting Crowns, and band Maranatha Music.
